Bordered by :
Pekalongan and Batang Regencies on the north, Wonosobo Regency on the east, Kebumen Regency on the south, and Banyumas and Purbalingga Regencies on the west.
More than half of this regency area is a mountainary. Generally Banjarnegara Regency is divided into 3 zone :
North Zone is a mountainous area that part of Dieng Plateau, North Serayu Mountainous area. There are some mount like Rogojembangan Mount and Prahu mount at the border of Pekalongan Regency and Batang Regency. Some area use to be tourist attraction, and there is a Geothermal Plant.
Middle Zone is the the fertile zone of the Serayu Depresi .
South Zone is a part of Serayu Mountains. Serayu river flows from the east, and its rivulets like Tulis River, Merawu River, Pekacangan River, Gintung River, and Sapi River. These rivers is used to irrigate rice field.
Transportation Banjarnegara is passed by the province road that connect Banyumas with Magelang and Semarang. Klampok is in the intersection of Purbalingga and Banyumas. And also there is a province road connecting Banjarnegara to Batang, crossing Dieng Plateau.
Intercity busses that crossing Banjarnegara are Solo-Bawen-Wonosobo-Purwokerto route; Semarang-Bawen-Wonosobo-Purwokerto route; Wonosobo-Banjarnegara-Bandung route; Wonosobo-Banjarnegara-Banyumas route and Banjarnegara-Jakarta route.

Dieng Plateau (Dataran tinggi Dieng)
Dieng Plateau (Dataran tinggi Dieng) located on the northeastern city Banjarnegara 55km, is the number 2 tourist destination in Central Java after Borobudur.
Dieng Plateau is a marshy plateau that forms the floor of a caldera complex on the Dieng volcano complex. The name "Dieng" comes from Di Hyang which means "Abode of the Gods". Its misty location and its mists, poisonous effusions and sulphur-coloured lakes make it a particularly auspicious place for religious tribute.
Geographically, Dieng Plateau is in 2 regencies area, those are Wonosobo Regency and Banjarnegara Regency. The height of this area is 2093 m above sea level, and the temperature is 15°C on the day and 10°C in the night.
On dry season, the temperature could be extremely drop to under 0°C. This low temperature could freeze the morning dew. To the Dieng's farmers, these frozen dew that they called upas dew are so un-friendly because they could endanger the potataoes and cabbages vegetation.
Dieng Plateau area is 619,846ha, surrounded with mountains such as Mount Sumbing, Mount Sindoro, Mount Perahu, Mount Rogojembangan, and mount Bismo. The sensational beauty of Dieng Plateau is if we come from Wonosobo, we can see sunrise two times.
The Dieng sunrise is called Golden Sunrise with golden sun and Silver Sunrise with white silvery sun shine. The first appearance or Golden Sunrise could be seen from watch tower on the height of 1,700 m above sea level. This location is before entering the Dieng Village. And the second appearance, or Silver Sunrise could be seen from the complex of the Hindu's temples.
Dieng Plateau is the site for eight small Hindu temples from the 7th and 8th centuries, the oldest Hindu temples in Central Java, and the first known standing stone structures in Java. They are originally thought to have numbered 400 but only some of them remain. The Dieng structures were small and relatively plain, but stone architecture developed substantially in only a matter of decades resulting in masterpieces such as the Prambanan complex and Borobudur. The temples are small shrines built as monuments to the god-ancestors, rather than as a convenience to man.
The middle of Dieng plateau before there is a place of worship and residence education at the oldest Hindu India. As the building is sacred until now we can see that the temple ruins and the rubble-used Vihara. From the object we can see there are:

Part of General Sudirman's guerilla campaign during Indonesian War of Independence took place in the area.
